Flood Precautions Urged

People living in low-lying areas of Christchurch, particularly along the Heathcote River, should take precautions against flooding.

Conditions are expected to worsen in the area from Colombo Street along the Heathcote to the Estuary until the high tide is due between 4-5pm. The Christchurch City Council's Water Services Manager, Allan Watson, said today that widespread flooding was expected in streets in low-lying areas and in some low-lying properties, but the water should not enter houses. "People are advised to take precautions by taking cars and any valuables out of garages and check all electrical equipment garages and other buildings," he said. Although Mr Watson did not expect floodwater to enter houses. He said people in low-lying areas could, as a precaution, lift valuables off floors. "We strongly urge people to take some precautions. The police have been alerted in case evacuation is necessary. Anyone with any concerns about evacuations should ring the Police on 379 3999," Mr Watson said. Further flooded streets include Aynsley Terrace, Bishopworth and Brabourne streets and Ernlea Terrace.
