Yellow flag waved at V8 consent hearing

Independent commissioners today waved a yellow flag at the Auckland V8 International resource consent hearing when they called for more information from the applicants.

The commissioners offered the applicants, IMG and Auckland City, the opportunity to provide more detailed information about the proposed central city street race. Specifically, they have been asked to supply more evidence about the effects on traffic, and the impact of noise.

IMG and Auckland City are considering this offer.

“We still believe we can make it happen. We just have to use this time to work closely with key stakeholders to find solutions,” says Councillor Scott Milne, chairperson of Auckland City’s Recreation and Events Committee.

“Aucklanders should be seriously concerned if we can’t get an event like this off the ground. Our international reputation as an event-friendly city hangs on this event. We lost the America’s Cup because we didn’t win. We can’t afford to lose this event before it even starts,” he says.

Should Auckland City and IMG choose to accept the offer to provide additional information to the commissioners, a date will be set for the hearing to reconvene.
