News release

25 August 2004

Improved transport infrastructure will bring economic growth to Wellington region

Improvements to transport infrastructure in the Wellington region will bring economic benefit to the region according to Greater Wellington Transport Strategic Direction Manager Tony Brennand.

He says Greater Wellington participated in and endorses the findings of the Allen/InfoMetric report due to be released today in Auckland, and tomorrow at a breakfast meeting here in Wellington.

“The objective of this report is to demonstrate that such an investment will have a positive spin-off on both regional and national indicators, will relieve congestion in the main centres and achieve a reduction in road accident crash rates.”

Tony says the report identifies transport infrastructure as pivotal to economic growth in the region.

“It is time for a wider debate on the direction surrounding the development of New Zealand’s transport infrastructure especially at this time when investment is being made.

“Any improvement to transport infrastructure will stimulate the economy leading to an increase in the Governments taxation revenue for the region. Investing in transport infrastructure is the secret to economic growth. It will generate greater revenue for the Government.”

Tony says the package of projects that are about to come on stream will be attractive to business in the region.
