Latest Triangle Television lineup PBS At Its Best

Public broadcasting at its best in latest Triangle Television line-up

Superb quality programmes produced by the prestigious US-based Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) feature strongly among the latest programme line-up to be broadcast to Auckland viewers by Triangle Television on UHF 41.

The new programmes provide fascinating insights into the music, health, politics, culture and history of the United States, and include interactive educational series.

Triangle is proud of its association with WorldNet, the international broadcasting service which carries PBS programming as well as news and public affairs reports and a host of other first-class programmes.

Chief executive Jim Blackman says: "PBS's latest varied programme formats, which include feature magazines, news reports, and live call-in shows provide independent, in-depth coverage of US affairs seldom seen in this part of the world."

Among the latest series included in the Triangle line-up are:

American Cinema, on Triangle Saturdays at 9pm, is a series of 10 hour-long and three half-hour programmes presenting film as art form, economic force and career choice, with clips from more than 300 of the greatest movies ever made. Film history and American culture is seen through the eyes of more than 150 Hollywood insiders, including Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg and Michael Eisner. Get Reel Music Mix, on Triangle Fridays at 5pm, is a fast-moving half-hour programme from the world of popular music, concerts and the stars who make the music.

Mountain Stage, on Triangle Sundays at 8.30pm (alternating with Jazz Alley TV) showcases many musical genres, including alternative, folk, R&B, blues, country, jazz, bluegrass and world music throughout its 39 hour-long episodes. Recorded live on location, well-known artists from Roseanne Cash to Robert Cray, and new talents such as Beth Nielsen Chapman and John Hammond play and sing for enthusiastic audiences of all ages.

Pulse, on Triangle Mondays at 10.30pm, is a medical magazine series which aims to help viewers understand the complexity of medical and health issues. Information in the 26 half-hour episodes includes research results, technology, procedures, risks, trends, prevention and cures.

American Passages: A Literacy Survey, on Triangle Tuesdays at 5pm, devotes each half-hour episode to a single movement, its prose and poetry, from James Frederick Douglass to Zora Neale Thurston, Mark Twain to Maxine Hong Kingston. The 16-part series examines a range of US writers within their social and historical milieu.

Biography of America, on Triangle Saturdays at 11pm and Wednesdays at 5pm, takes the viewer along an exploration and analysis of the US from its settlement in the 16th century to its second millennium. Each of this series' 26 episodes looks at a particular era through the lens of both archival materials and contemporary perspectives.

On Common Ground: Framework for Democracy, on Triangle Wednesdays at 5.30pm, is back with 13 new programmes.

Triangle Television is Auckland's regional, non-commercial television station and has operated as a public broadcaster to Greater Auckland since August 1 1998. The channel screens a mix of regional-access television with international news and information programmes. Local news screens at 6.55p.m. daily. The station is non-profit making and operates with no funding from NZ on Air. Triangle broadcasts 24 hours daily from UHF channel 41.
