Manufacturing Sales Decrease 1.0 Percent

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales for the September 2003 quarter decreased by 1.0 percent, compared with the June 2003 quarter, according to Statistics New Zealand. With the effect of price changes removed, seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales decreased by 0.2 percent in the September 2003 quarter, compared with the June 2003 quarter.

Four out of 15 industries recorded decreases in seasonally adjusted sales in the September 2003 quarter, compared with the June 2003 quarter. Meat and dairy product manufacturing (down 7.8 percent) and other food manufacturing (down 4.5 percent) recorded the largest decreases. Paper and paper product manufacturing (up 7.8 percent) and structural, sheet, and fabricated metal product manufacturing (up 3.3 percent) recorded the largest increases in seasonally adjusted sales.

The trend in total manufacturing sales increased 0.1 percent in the September 2003 quarter, compared with the June 2003 quarter. This follows decreases of 0.3 percent in the June 2003 quarter and 1.2 percent in the March 2003 quarter.
