Kiwibank To Launch Text Banking Service

Kiwibank will next month launch a service for customers enabling them to get their bank balances by text message to their mobile phone.

By simply sending a text to Kiwibank, customers who have registered for the service will receive their account balances for the nominated account within seconds. The service will work through phones linked to Telecom and Vodafone networks. Customers will be charged through their mobile phone account.

Kiwibank Chief Executive Sam Knowles said the service will be quick and easy. "It will be particularly useful for a customer considering a purchase and not sure if they have enough funds available.

"Texting your balance is extremely convenient. You can get a balance report from the street, an office, a bar, a shop - in fact anywhere with mobile phone coverage."

Mr Knowles said it is intended to launch the service in early July. Customers will be able to register, nominate the bank account they want to use for the service, add the Kiwibank contact number to their text message address book and the service will be available immediately. The process includes a personal identification number for security purposes at registration.
