A Failure On Board Tim Mascalzone Latino
PRESS RELEASE
A FAILURE ON BOARD TIM MASCALZONE LATINO AND THE BRITISH TEAM TAKES THE LEAD
Auckland, 14th Octber, 2002 It would have been a result decided in the jury room for “TIM Mascalzone Latino” that at sea couldn’t prevent the British victory. Unfortunately the result has been confirmed also in the jury room. Here is the story of last day of RR1.
“TIM Mascalzone Latino” crosses the starting line exactly at the same time of “GBR Challenge”, the all-Italian team windward close to the race committee vessel: unfortunately just at the beginning of the leg the wind (NW 18 knots, the course race shortened to 4 legs/12,5 nm) shifts to the left side of the course and the Brits take the lead resulting in a mark rounding ahead “TIM Mascalzone Latino”.
”At beginning of first leeward leg the wind got lighter and during a sail change between spinnaker and gennaker said the “caddy” (in “TIM Mascalzone Latino” slang caddy is the mainsail assistant) Nello Pavoni we had a failure in the spinnaker pole that resulted in a lost of speed”.
The situation become even worst as the Brits dropped the spinnaker at sea while rounding the mark: “TIM Mascalzone Latino” had to keep away from the floating sail while turning the mark at his turn.
Because of this reason “TIM Mascalzone Latino” lodged a protest against “GBR”, but it has been dismissed by the jury.
The second scheduled, the match against “Prada” race didn’t take place as stated in the NOR rule no. 8: “Should a yacht incur damage before the end of the first race on a day when it is scheduled to race two races, that yacht may be excused from starting in the second race Š”. The race will be re-sailed on the first day, 22nd October, of RR2.
Mascalzone Latino and its team are racing with the TIM colours, the only mobile telephone company entirely Italian and sole sponsor for this all-Italian challenge.
