FRINGE '04: Leila Adu - Dig A Hole NZ Tour
“Her voice is extraordinary…both
tender and terrifying.”
Grant Smithies. SundayStar Times.
London born, New Zealand raised and of Ghanan heritage, Leila’s broad scope of influences is more than merely geographic. Her unique songs are informed by studies in modern composition, Javanese singing, Balinese gamelan and the passionate music of Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Josephine Baker.
In the past 5 years Leila has performed in jazz and contemporary music festivals around New Zealand, Russia, Indonesia and Great Britain. With her compositions performed in galleries, concert halls and alternative music venues throughout New Zealand.
Her debut album ‘Dig A Hole’ has garnered rave reviews from all corners of the critical establishment, from contemporary music broadcaster William Dart exclaiming ‘Adu fearlessly goes where most local singer songwriters wouldn’t dare’ to The Sunday Star’s Grant Smithies calling her album ‘a challenge to a host of lesser pop contenders’.
The single ‘I’m calling’ has been on regular rotation on Radio Active and the film clip is being regularly featured on RTR.
Currently Leila is preparing for a 10 city tour of New Zealand as well as a series of concerts in Melbourne – including shows at ‘The Empress’ and ‘The Pony Club.’
