Holding Student Fees Down
24 May 2001
Delivering better value is a critical business objective that has much wider application, according to Simon Carlaw, Chief Executive Business NZ.
"$23 million spent by the education sector in advertising for customers last year would certainly help the universities and other providers keep student fees down.
"Public league tables and greater transparency regarding quality would be a less expensive way to compete for customers, if the pressure on funding is as tight as some tertiary providers seem to be suggesting.
"The tertiary sector should also look hard at whether New Zealand's limited ability to fund world class staff really demands the plethora of competing institutions and qualifications that exist for a population of less than four million.
"We certainly endorse the case for ensuring that the proposed Tertiary Education Commission is representative of the whole community - not just education providers," Mr Carlaw said.
