ACC and Plunket join forces in car seat rental scheme
The Accident Compensation Corporation and Plunket have joined forces to provide 1000 child car seats to lower income families.
ACC Programme Manager Diana Pedlow said the restraints would be made available to lower income families at a reduced rental in an effort to improve usage.
"National surveys have shown that in some lower income areas, 31 percent of children under five are unrestrained in cars. All children should be buckled up safely on every car journey, so we are working hard to increase the availability of child restraints," Ms Pedlow said.
The seats are funded by ACC and distributed by Plunket through 46 of its 170 outlets around the country.
Plunket's National Car Seat Rental Scheme Advisor, Catherine McLaren, said the seats would add another 5 percent to Plunket's stock.
"These extra seats are absolutely fantastic. The lower price will make all the difference for many families," she said.
The seats will be rented out at $3 a month plus GST, or $36 plus GST a year.
Community service cardholders and people referred by other agencies such as the Police would be among those considered for the preferential rental arrangements.
Ms Pedlow said Plunket was the ideal partner because of its large distribution network which reaches into all corners of the community.
