Nobel Peace Prize Winner 2002 - Jimmy Carter

The Nobel Peace Prize Committee announced at 5:01 am EST that this year's recipient is Jimmy Carter, former U.S. President from 1978-1981.

Carter had been nominated several times over the years, losing out in 1978 (for his role in the Camp David peace accords between Egypt and Israel) on a technicality.

Over the years, Carter has travelled the globe, often to controversial hotspots such as Cuba, North America, Nicaragua, Sudan, Palestine, Haiti, and Southeast Asia.

Twenty years ago, Carter established the Carter Center to resolve conflicts and promote democracy throughout the world. The Center sponsors development programs dealing with disease and malnutrition in 65 different nations, 35 of which are in Africa.
