Re: Is Germany About to ‘Stiff’ Bush?
I discovered Scoop last week and read it now nearly every day. I think you mixed something in today´s article: see… Is Germany About to ‘Stiff’ Bush?
As far as i remember, it was our former minister of justice, Hertha Däubler-Gmelin, who made the "Bush-Hitler" comparison. Joschka Fischer, our foreign minister, is still in charge, thank god :-)
Best regards -

DEPUTY EDITOR’S REPLY:
Hi Gregor,
thanks for your email.. yes I did mix up the minister's
title.. I wrote “the then foreign minister”, it ought to
have read “the then justice minister”. Thank you for picking

Re: Brownlee’s Nuke Rethink Dangerous
Dear Scoop Editor
National's Gerry Brownlee’s desire to welcome US naval visits (10 January) is dangerous and unimaginative.
It ignores the fact that United States policy is still to re-arm naval ships with nuclear weapons during international tensions. Once US warship visits were regularised again in normal circumstances it would be too late, in international emergencies, to suddenly try to reject them once again. Even visiting nuclear-powered naval ships, as such, would constitute a nuclear risk if attacked by nuclear, or conventional (including potentially terrorist), explosives.
National, like the Government itself, needs to rethink, innovatively and constructively, about how to connect well with all, including both the United States and those who at times disagree with it. For instance, by developing brokerage roles in diplomacy and – potentially very profitable - information services. Also by helping, seriously, with “The Dialogue of Civilisations” initiative. Some have worked for about 20 years on how to develop educational, and other infrastructures to amplify these roles.
Yours sincerely
