The Independence Rag - Song By Don Franks

Image from last nights protest at U.S. Ambassador Charles Swindell's July 4th party

Some words get torn and twisted, in politician's teeth like "Freedom", "Honour", "Liberty" they've all come to grief - today its "Independence Day" now - There's a punch drunk phrase! - come closer and I'll spell out what it really means these days.

The Independence Rag - Song By Don Franks

I is for inspectors searching the desert for bombs
N is for the nuclear ones mostly owned by the Yanks and the Poms
D's for the double standard independence for Bush and his mates
E is for everyone they keep down like the poor folks in the States

OH SAY CAN'T YOU SEE ONLY THE MARKET IS FREE

P's for possessing petroleum, a great US tradition
E is for executing those opposed to that position
N is for napalm, the chemical weapon that tortured Vietnam
D's for the dollars paid politicians to say that it did no harm

OH SAY CAN'T YOU SEE - ONLY THE MARKET IS FREE

E is for empty promises to bring democracy
N's for the time that we stuffed them good and went to Nuclear Free
C is for Clark and we don't quite know just what Clark does stand for. Cos she thinks that Enduring Freedom, means supporting America's war.
E is the end of the rhyming, but not the end of the fight so we'll see you all at the protest at the embassy tonight!
