Newsflash: Nanaia Mahuta Will Not Resign

Tainui Maori Labour MP Nanaia Mahuta has just announced to Parliament that she will not be resigning her seat and from the Labour Party.

Concluding her speech in the First Reading debate for the Foreshore and Seabed Bill Ms Mahuta said she would not be resigning, but added that the Government would need to work hard to retain the confidence of her electorate and the people of the Tainui Waka.

In recent days Ms Mahuta has refused to rule out the possibility of her resignation, raising questions over whether Prime Minister Helen Clark might need to seek an accommodation with either the Greens or NZ First in order to assure passage of the Budget.

As this item is published fellow Labour Maori MP Mita Ririnui has given up his debate slot in the debate in order to enable Tariana Turia, whose resignation takes effect on May 17th, to make a speech on the bill. Earlier leave was refused several times for Ms Turia to make a speech.
