Government Should Be Applauded For Policy U-turn
The ACT party hopes that the Government’s latest attempt to woo favour with business is genuine and not merely a political gesture, said ACT Leader, Hon Richard Prebble.
Commerce Minister Paul Swain announced today that the Government is launching an initiative to look at reducing the costs of complying with government regulations.
“This announcement is a bit rich coming from a government who built its reputation on ignoring business concerns. However, any government that is prepared to own up to its mistakes and attempt a policy U-turn, should be congratulated.
“The government has announced they will publish a new business compliance cost statement as part of all new legislation. This is intended to show what compliance costs are being imposed and will allow business the opportunity to have a say on those costs as part of the select committee process.
“Businesses across New Zealand, both big and small, appeared before select committees to oppose legislation like the Employment Relations Act and the re-nationalisation of ACC. The government chose to ignore their concerns and continue its ideological reforms.
“If the government is now admitting it was wrong, it is a small step in the right direction.
“The government should also look at the large costs imposed on the average householder trying to comply with the Resource Management Act.
“The government should be applauded for its policy U-turn,” said Hon Richard Prebble.
