Sealord Deal: Sell Out Of NZ's Vital Interests
Sealord Deal: Sell Out Of New Zealand’s Vital Interests – Says Peters
The Rt Hon Winston Peters MP, Leader of
New Zealand First, today said that the Sealord Deal
announced yesterday, which he predicted on 13 October,
represented the sell out of New Zealand’s vital
interests.
“This deal is a double tragedy.
“First we have the sale of a finite New Zealand resource to a foreign company. The Government clearly has not learned a lesson from the selling of strategic assets, such as Telecom and New Zealand Railways, to foreign companies.
“The tragedy is compounded by the fact that a consortium of New Zealand fishing companies were also bidders but were rejected.
“The second tragedy is that Nissui is a subsidiary of the Japanese giant fishing conglomerate – Nippon Sui San, and Nippon Sui San is the largest whaling company in the world, “ said Mr Peters.
Mr Peters said that the sale was a clear signal to all New Zealanders that the Government will sacrifice any principle and, in this regard, is no different from its predecessor.
