Cannabis Inquiry All Go - Greens Present On Wednesday
Green Party Justice Spokesperson Nandor Tanczos today said he was pleased and relieved that the long-promised inquiry into the most effective strategies to deal with cannabis, including its legal status, will start next week.
The Health Select Committee today announced that the inquiry would start hearing submissions next week. The Green Party is set to deliver its submission to the inquiry next Wednesday, 30 May at 3.20pm.
Mr Tanczos said he had been increasingly frustrated with the delays in getting the inquiry off the ground and had asked a number of questions in the House of the Chair of the Health Select Committee, Judy Keall, as to when the public hearings would start.
"I am pleased that the committee can finally get to work on finding better ways to deal with the issue. The law as it stands sees over half of the adult population breaking the law at one time or another," said Mr Tanczos.
"It is clear to anyone with an open mind that the current law is failing to reduce the abuse of cannabis and in fact may be encouraging it.
"Use among our young people continues to grow. Let's first decide what outcomes we want from a cannabis policy, and there is widespread agreement on that already, and only then design policy around those goals."
