Railway Spend-up a Waste of Money
Railway Spend-up a Waste of Money
Monday, October 1 2001 Penny Webster Press Releases -- Transport
Auckland
needs the infrastructure of roads before public money is
pumped into a railway system that hardly anybody is going to
use, ACT Transport Spokesman MP Penny Webster said
today.
"Eighty-one million dollars would go a long way to finishing the motorway system. This railway corridor will only be used by a fraction of Aucklanders.
"Local body elections in Auckland have been polarised between pro-and anti-rail network candidates.
"Business has been asking for the roads to be finished - is this another Government anti-business move?
"People like their cars. Finishing the roading network would help the majority of people. Why doesn't the Government help the majority and get the roading finished?
"This Government is trying to turn back the clock - creating the People's Bank, contemplating propping up Air New Zealand and now, setting itself up as a railway company.
"Tranzrail must be laughing all the way to the bank," Penny Webster said.
