Proposals to go to caucus on Tuesday
Alliance leader Jim Anderton will take a series of proposals to his caucus next week.
The proposals reconfirm the strategy of a long-term commitment to a constructive coalition relationship with Labour in a positive, progressive government.
Jim Anderton will propose specific steps to support that commitment at all levels.
“Issues that have been publicly aired this week centre on questions over whether there has been adequate commitment at all levels to that strategic direction.
“Alliance supporters will be disappointed that those party issues have been aired publicly this week, and I regret it.
“Attempts were made to handle all the issues in party forums, and it is regrettable that issues have spilled over outside the appropriate venues.
“As most news media know, I have been resisting interviews where possible all week and I do not intend to respond to some of the detailed allegations made this week.
“To do so would continue to distract from the very positive role the Alliance is playing in helping to deliver the lowest level of unemployment in a generation, along with significant policy gains such as paid parental leave and the kiwi bank.
“I have asked for the Alliance President Matt McCarten to be present at caucus and he is welcome to discuss proposals with me by phone beforehand.
“I will be seeking broad party agreement to the strategic proposals I have developed and I believe that support will be forthcoming.”
