ACT's Two Newest MPs

ACT's Two Newest MPs

Sunday 28 Jul 2002

New Zealanders elected two new ACT members to parliament on Saturday. They are Deborah Coddington and Heather Roy.

Deborah Coddington, number six on the ACT list, stood for the party vote in North Shore.

"As an Auckland MP - and particularly as ACT MP responsible for the North Shore electorate - I want to see a swift solution to Auckland's traffic problems," Ms Coddington said.

"If we are to have economic growth and lift the standards of living for all New Zealanders, we need to overhaul the regulations which hold up the development of roads for years.

"I have a particular interest in Housing, Police, Corrections, ACC, Agriculture, Local Government, and Women's Affairs - the latter because I would like to see that department abolished. It is a patronising insult to women and a waste of taxpayers' money.

"I look forward to using the research I've already done in Canada and the UK to draft a Private Members Bill which will allow for a national database of sex offenders and paedophiles so they will not be able to be released into unsuspecting, and unprotected communities," Ms Coddington said.

Mrs Roy, number nine on the ACT list, stood for the party vote in Ohariu-Belmont.

"I will focus on building on the strong support ACT has in the Wellington region," Mrs Roy said.

"I am delighted to be joining the ACT team and look forward to tackling issues of substance.

"I intend to take a strong interest in matters related to Healthcare. My background is in health, having worked as a physiotherapist and medical research co-ordinator," Mrs Roy said.

Ms Coddington and Mrs Roy today expressed gratitude to their electorate teams and families.

Their biographies, together with those of ACT's re-elected members of parliament and candidates, are available at http://www.act.org.nz/action/list.html
