Greens Urge Cullen To Stop Sale Of New Zealand Icon
Green co-leader Rod Donald today strongly urged Finance Minister Michael Cullen to stop the sale of Young Nicks Head to an American financier.
It has been reported that Dr Cullen will have received advice from the Overseas Investment Commission on the proposed sale by 9am today. If there is no agreement reached between Ngai Tamanuhiri and the proposed buyer an announcement from Dr Cullen is expected by 5pm today.
"The responsibility to keep this national icon in New Zealand ownership is now solely Dr Cullen's," said Mr Donald.
"To approve this sale to an off shore buyer the Minister must believe that the sale is in New Zealand's national interest.
"Given that this land is of high national significance I cannot see how allowing it to pass into foreign ownership could possible be in the national interest," said Mr Donald.
