Govt engaged on Waihi underground mining issue

Associate Energy Minister Harry Duynhoven said today he was looking forward to a positive and constructive meeting in Waihi on Thursday night to consider the report of the Waihi Underground Mines Working Party.

Mr Duynhoven and officials will attend the public meeting, organised by the Hauraki District Council, to listen to the views and suggestions of those affected by the new risk assessment. Earlier in the day they will inspect the affected area.

“The Government takes the working party’s report seriously and recognises that the risks it identified must be addressed,” Mr Duynhoven said.

“I had a very useful discussion of the issues with Hauraki District Mayor Basil Morrison last week and I am confident we can work through them effectively. I expect we wil be able to handle this matter in similar fashion to the way the subsidence last December was dealt with, but we must look at all practical options.

“My assurance to the people of Waihi is that the Government will play its part in finding a solution.”
