Painted Apple Moth decision about time

The Government's finally worked out that eradication rather than 'controlled management' is what's needed to wipe out the painted apple moth, says National's Biosecurity spokesman Shane Ardern.

"The potential damage to our primary industries and the natural environment caused by this pest makes eradication the only option. Controlled management was never going to work.

"This decision should have been made 12 months ago when the incursion first happened - but it's a case of better late than never.

"It is imperative that our native forests and horticultural industries are protected against breaches of biosecurity. Our ecosystem is not immune to foreign pest incursions so it's the vital the Government acts swiftly.

"Hopefully, the expanded effort announced today will eradicate the painted apple moth, but it will be no thanks to a protracted response from the Government," says Mr Ardern.
