SAS Troops Must Stay in Afghanistan

SAS Troops Must Stay in Afghanistan

Friday 1 Nov 2002 Ken Shirley Press Releases -- Foreign Affairs & Defence

New Zealand's SAS troops must stay in Afghanistan while they are contributing to the global war on terrorism, ACT Foreign Affairs and Defence Spokesman Ken Shirley said today.

"We recognise and appreciate the contribution that our troops are making. New Zealand has an obligation to assist the global campaign against terrorism. It would be the wrong signal for us to withdraw at this time.

"The Government has already made several blunders in terms of meeting our international obligations, such as Helen Clark's failure to respond immediately to the terrorist attacks of September 11.

"Withdrawing our troops would send the totally wrong signal to the brave soldiers who were recently wounded in action - they would wonder what on earth they are doing there.

"ACT distances itself from any call to withdraw our troops from Afghanistan," Mr Shirley said.
