Child poverty test case
Green Party Children's Issues Spokesperson Sue Bradford said today she fully supported the Child Poverty Action Group's complaint to the Human Rights Commission over the Child Tax Credit.
The group has filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission, claiming the Child Tax Credit breaches the Human Rights Act, and is a discriminatory and damaging piece of legislation.
Ms Bradford said today the Child Tax Credit, originally named the Independent Tax Credit, discriminated against beneficiaries and people not in the workforce.
"Every child should have the best possible start in life - regardless of the income of their parents," Ms Bradford said.
"There shouldn't be any discrimination between low-income earners. The Child Tax Credit should be repealed immediately. In fact, the Labour Government should have repealed it three years ago."
The Green Party wants total reform of family assistance and support so that no family is discriminated against, and ultimately wants a universal child benefit for all children.
The Child Tax Credit is available only to families which get their main income from working.
