Britain - Here We Come!
New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters has warned that the Somali problems in Christchurch shows that New Zealand is heading down a dangerous path towards the ethnic strife experienced by Britain.
Mr Peters comments follow reports of strife within the 400-strong Somali community in Christchurch where there are 13 clans represented, all of which have been involved in a civil war in Somalia since the mid-1980s.
As well as being divided among clans, the community is reported to be divided over how to merge its traditional culture with New Zealand customs.
“We have imported civil war and ethnic strife that now threatens law-abiding New Zealanders,” said Mr Peters.
“We have enough problems of our own without importing the hatred and blind prejudices of other cultures.”
“There is no room for ethnic violence in New Zealand. If these people are having serious problems adjusting to living in our country, the most humane course of action for the Government to take would be to send them home again with some funds to help them make a fresh start.”
Mr Peters said it would be interesting to find out whether the warring Somalis were making a contribution to the community or whether they were being paid welfare benefits.
