Govt and United against improvements for disabled
National Spokesperson for Disabilities Sandra Goudie was stunned today by United and Labour's voting against her amendments to the Local Government Act in support of people with disabilities.
"I wanted to ensure disability access to public buildings and to public places and that they met the New Zealand Disability Standards.
"My amendment required territorial authorities to actively ensure those standards are being met.
"Sadly United and Labour voted it down. I know that many people I have met, particularly since I have been in office, will be disappointed. Access to public places is an ongoing problem for people with disabilities. Their needs are often overlooked or in some cases forgotten altogether.
"In spite of this negative response by United and Labour I will continue to do what I can to bring about positive changes,” Mrs Goudie said.
