Prebble Requests Special Parliamentary Iraq Debate
Prebble Requests Special Parliamentary Debate on Iraq
ACT Leader Richard Prebble has today written to the Prime Minster to request that the government set aside time for a special parliamentary debate on Iraq.
"Parliament has not debated the present situation and the government has not given a clear explanation of its stance", Mr Prebble said.
"The real issue is whether the world is safer when the United States, the world's only super power, is prepared to act against rogues states like Iraq.
"The ACT Party's view is that evidence that Iraq is in violation of UN resolutions is overwhelming, and New Zealand should respond favourably to the request that we have received.
"In any event this very important
decision will have long term consequences for New Zealand
and deserves to be the subject of a special parliamentary
debate. I note from the news media that parliaments
around the world have held such debates, with the notable
exception of New Zealand", said Mr Prebble.
