Corruption Drives Into Driving Tests
New Zealand First MP Ron Mark says bribery and corruption has become part of the drivers’ licence test.
He has received information from members of the public about language interpreters accepting cash bribes to cheat on immigrants’ drivers’ licence theory tests.
Mr Mark has asked the Minister of Police for answers.
“It appears very little, if anything, is being done to screen interpreters to ensure they are of good character. That has allowed the sinister act of bribery to creep in.”
Mr Mark has also questioned whether learner drivers with low English language skills have all the skills necessary for driving.
“If the English of a recent immigrant is so bad that they need help to sit a straightforward test, what happens when they get behind the wheel of a car and have to navigate around a country where the road signs are all in English? How do they find their motorway exit? Are they forced to crawl along the side of the road while attempting to decipher road signs and street names?
“I have written to the Minister for an assurance that no road accidents or property damage have been caused because an unqualified or incompetent driver obtained their licence by unscrupulous means?
“It appears some immigrants
expect to replicate all aspects of their culture in New
Zealand and it is well-known that corruption is entrenched
in some exotic communities.”
