Can Minister Ensure Safety?
ACT New Zealand Police Spokesman Dr Muriel Newman today demanded an assurance from Police Minister George Hawkins that the secondment of 100 police officers to America's Cup duties would not be detrimental to police districts throughout the country.
"While the need for more police officers at the America's Cup event is clear, the question remains as to the effect that pulling 100 police officers from their own districts will have," said Dr Newman.
"Can the Minister assure New Zealand that people will not be put at risk from the loss of police from their towns and cities?
"This secondment also begs the question as to where these police have come from. Are these the same police who were used to help alleviate Auckland's recent staff shortage crisis, or are there now even more police being yanked from their own districts to serve in Auckland?
"Mr Hawkins must ensure that police are available to keep
citizens safe. He must provide an assurance that, while
police are protecting yachting enthusiasts and fans, the
rest of New Zealand is not at risk of a rising crime
wave," Dr Newman said.
