Govt must keep promise on dog legislation

Govt must keep promise of quick action on dog legislation

National says the Government must be held to account on passing new dog legislation quickly, after the Local Government Law Reform Bill (No.2) (Dog Control Amendment) was sent back to the Select Committee today.

National MP Dr Paul Hutchison says the Government must ensure that workable and enforceable dog laws are enacted within a few months.

"Given that the Bill was first reported back to Parliament in 1999 and Labour has done nothing about it, it is vital the Government responds to serious dog attacks that have been steadily increasing over the last decade.

"It is imperative that the Government and Parliament ensures the speedy progress of legislation after the compelling submission by John Anderson to all Parliamentarians last week, and the tragic but preventable attacks on children in recent months," says Dr Hutchison.
