Greens back peaceful resolution

Greens back peaceful resolution

The Green Party is calling on the Government to publicly support a French UN resolution that would see a tightening of the weapons inspection regime in Iraq.

"There are now two draft resolutions on the table," Green Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Keith Locke said today. "One - backed by the US, Britain and Spain - would lead to massive loss of life, regional devastation and global instability. The other provides a framework in which Iraq can disarm peacefully.

"There can be no doubt which is the preferred option and this Government should endorse the sentiments contained in the French initiative."

Keith Locke is a guest tonight at the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the French-German Treaty of Cooperation, at which he will be conveying the Green Party's support for the French resolution and its appreciation of the efforts undertaken by the French and German Governments to avert catastrophe in the Middle East.
