Government Must Stop Child Poverty
The child poverty report is a sad indictment on the Government and its apparent lack of concern over a distressing problem, said New Zealand First family affairs spokesperson Barbara Stewart.
“The report shows nearly one third of children live in poverty. We are a First World country and once led the world with the care of our children,” said Mrs Stewart.
“How have we reached this sad state and why is the Government not doing anything to rectify this problem?
“Ongoing child poverty can only cause more serious problems in the future so it is essential that children are reached and given every opportunity to live a decent life.
“The Government talks of low unemployment and an upturn in the economy yet seems unwilling to face the increasing problem of people living in sub-standard conditions.
“It is time for the Government to act and take
on board the recommendations of the report and start looking
after the most vulnerable people in our society,” said Mrs
Stewart.
