Is Labour Simply Looking After Its Mates?

ACT New Zealand Rural Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff today attacked the Government's Public Access Reference Group, saying the presence of Mr Gottlieb Braun-Elwart in the group was a clear conflict of interest.

"A professional mountain guide who has been denied access to private mountain lands in the past, Mr Braun-Ewart's views on access are well known throughout the high country community," Mr Eckhoff said.

"The fact that he is also the personal guide and friend of Prime Minister Helen Clark makes it reasonable to assume he would have lobbied the Prime Minister constantly over this issue.

"His appointment to this committee raises serious questions, as he will become a major beneficiary of the group's recommendations.

"Access to all mountain lands over 700 metres will enable Mr Braun-Elwart to wander at will with his fee paying clients, courtesy of his close friend the Prime Minister.

"Nepotism is certainly alive and well under this Labour Government," Mr Eckhoff said.
