Deadline Raises Serious Questions
ACT New Zealand Rural Affairs Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff today questioned the March 28 deadline for the inquiry into public access to private land, saying that it further proved the pending outcome was a foregone conclusion.
"It is insulting that this serious issue has such a limited timeframe for the accumulation of data, as well as landowner and recreational opinion," Mr Eckhoff said.
"Property owners and recreational groups need time to carefully consider how or why property rights can be attenuated, or if the cost of doing so outweighs the benefits. The Reference Group must explain just what a freehold title means if landowners loose exclusive use of their land.
"Despite the belief of Reference Group chair John Ackland, few will have any faith in the group's ability to sway the Prime Minister's desire to ensure free and unfettered access to her favourite recreational pursuit," Mr Eckhoff said.
