Time To Be Honest, George

ACT New Zealand Police Spokesman Dr Muriel Newman today welcomed the frank and free discussion, that occurred over the weekend, which has exposed the very real problems currently plaguing New Zealand Police.

"The police rally has exposed the strain currently burdening New Zealand police throughout the country," Dr Newman said.

"The fact that police are so stretched that they must threaten action shows all is not well with our police force - contrary to Police Minister George Hawkins' glib replies and assurances.

"While Mr Hawkins tries to convince the public, and Parliament, that police are on top of crime, the reality is very different. Gangs outnumber police three-to-one, methamphetamine manufacture and distribution have skyrocketed, and crime is increasing across the board.

"How has Labour combated this? By cutting such initiatives as the police's early recruitment programme and reducing police funding - from 1.9 percent of total spending when Labour became Government, to 1.7 percent today.

"The state of New Zealand police is the state of our national security, and it is imperative that New Zealanders understand what is going on with their police force.

"It is time the Minister was honest and transparent. I am calling on Mr Hawkins to tell the public how he intends to ease the stress on police, and give them the tools and resources to allow them to effectively fight the war on crime," Dr Newman said.
