Marc My Words

Marc My Words

By Marc Alexander.

Some men would rather be wrong than quiet.this is certainly true of some CEOs. The same could not be said for my wife who alerted me to one of the most stupid, inane pieces of wisdom ever admitted by a man. And if I don't write about it, she will put her foot down..on mine!!

Apparently, there has been an investigation into how the Electoral Commission has had to dig into its coffers to educate the public about how our election process works. So far, so good. But in trying to explain MMP, things got a wee bit unstuck. In yesterday's Sunday Star-Times was this little gem: "Chief Executive Paul Harris said the government provided $680,000 for an education campaign, but the commission spent an additional $180,000 to ensure groups like women and minorities knew how to vote."

I don't know if Mr Harris is married or not, but with comments that effectively diminish the ability of women, I'd say he's on pretty thin ice. He's brave but foolhardy to suggest that, in a country where the present and immediate past Prime Minister, the Governor General and a whole flock of public and private leaders are women of exceptional ability, the fairer sex need an education over and above that of males. I would go so far as to say that if anyone needs political enlightenment it must surely be the crop of men!!

Generally speaking, women are generally speaking. That they do so with their brains working is the one advantage that they have over us testosterone-burdened men. Unfortunately comments such as those advanced by Monsieur Harris only reinforce that view. Furthermore, does he really think women are a minority? Even in a crowded room of men a single woman could never be a minority. Women do things better than men in those things that matter.and they can accessorize! Truth be told, most women can wrap men around their fingers with little effort. We are after all, only men.like sheep waiting for our Bo Peep to lead us.

Still, we men have our delusions. When one psychiatrist said to a colleague in a bar recently, " See that man over there, well, he claims to truly understand women." "Really", responded his companion," is he a psychiatrist as well?" "Are you kidding? He's a patient".
