PM opens Hillsborough homes
Prime Minister Helen Clark today opened a new $9.9 million Housing New Zealand complex in Auckland, saying it further demonstrated the government’s commitment to providing affordable accommodation to low income people.
The 51-unit development in Hillsborough Rd, Lynfield, is designed mainly for older tenants, with a small number of units being suitable for disabled access.
Helen Clark said that housing for older people is in great demand across Auckland.
“This multi-storied retirement development helps increase Auckland’s supply of affordable housing for older people.
“Housing New Zealand has been working closely with the community to ensure that the development is in character with the surrounding area. The complex, which includes a community room, landscaping, and outdoor decks, is the desired outcome from the consultation.”
Some of the tenants are moving from larger state houses which no longer suited their needs, and that frees up those houses for other families, Helen Clark said.
“The government recognises the high level of demand for housing in Auckland and we are committed to providing more state housing here.
“Since we became government we
have added about 1150 state houses in Auckland, as well as
acquiring Auckland City Council’s housing portfolio of
approximately 1600 units. On top of that, this year we plan
to add another 680 homes to Auckland’s state housing stock,
and more in future,” Helen Clark
said.
