PM should pack a peace message, say Greens

Green MP Keith Locke wants the Prime Minister to include a strong antiwar message to give European leaders when she packs her bags tomorrow for a 12-day visit.

The Green Party's Foreign Affairs spokesperson said Helen Clark should adopt a strong position against widening the Iraq war to Syria when she meets the leaders of Great Britain, France, Belgium and the European Commission.

"Helen Clark should join with European leaders in opposing America's sabre-rattling against Syria," said Mr Locke.

"Rather than go off on another military adventure America should pull out of Iraq. The huge protests in Baghdad yesterday show that this is what the Iraqi people want.

"Helen Clark can champion a role for the United Nations in the rebuilding of Iraq, and offer a New Zealand contribution.

"As a nuclear-free country we should support Syria's proposal for a treaty to make the Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction.

"This move needs strong European backing to counter American support for Israel's nuclear strike force, the greatest threat of mass destruction in the region."
