ACT Condemns Government Stand on Americas Cup
73% of New Zealanders are opposed to funding the America's Cup campaign with taxpayer's money ACT Leader Richard Prebble said today.
"We have surveyed households throughout New Zealand and results show there is no region, including Auckland, where there is any significant support for taxpayers funding the race.
"It is also against the spirit of the race. Government has never funded yachting. America's Cup racing is for people who want to show off how much money they have made. It appears that the Labour Government, after overtaxing the country $4 billion wants to flaunt its wealth to the world.
"The Labour Ministers should realise that it's not their money and belongs to ordinary New Zealanders. We are still a free country and if ordinary citizens want to donate their money for a yacht race then they can do so. It is not a Government prerogative" said Mr Prebble.
