Dunne: Children's Bill needs mainstream support
United Future leader, Peter Dunne, says the controversial Care of Children Bill being proposed by the Government needs support from mainstream New Zealand if it is to be credible among New Zealanders.
"It would be a great pity if the Bill were to be passed solely with the support of the extremist Greens in Parliament," said Mr Dunne.
"I was astonished to hear this morning that the Greens say they support the Bill because they are pro-family. A party that is as obsessed as the Greens are with promoting drug use and destroying jobs by opposing trade and advances in science can hardly be described as pro-family.
"United Future believes this Bill has some excellent proposals to benefit the New Zealand family, but it also has major negative aspects.
"We are happy to sit down with the Government to make dramatic improvements to the Bill so that it can receive significant support in the House and a similar level of support among the wider population," said Mr Dunne.
