Marlborough region doing well

Economic Development Minister Jim Anderton who is visiting Marlborough today said he is impressed with the level of innovation of companies and individuals in the region.

“New Zealand regions are showing strong growth of just under 4 per cent despite a negative international environment. Marlborough shares the New Zealand average growth rate of around 4 per cent and record low unemployment of 3.5 per cent; the second lowest level in New Zealand,” the Progressive leader said.

“Even when conditions are not ideal, regions, industries and businesses can still work to ensure their growth is as strong as possible. The businesses and people I have met in Marlborough show that the region is in a good position to take advantage of local innovation and create jobs,” the Progressive leader added.

Marlborough is developing its Wine Research Centre of Excellence and the coalition government is pleased to support the initiative through the Regional Partnerships Programme as it will have lasting benefits to the region.

“Marlborough will benefit from its strategic regional plan which identifies key issues such as skill shortages, water resources, transport and broadband infrastructure, lack of venture capital and communication with local iwi.

“I was particularly impressed with my visit to Queen Charlotte College which has entered a partnership with the local marine farming industry to create an aquaculture academy. This initiative which builds both skills and local economic development is to be applauded,” the Progressive leader said.
