Don't worry be happy, Jim tells Nats
Acting PM and Progressive leader Jim Anderton is urging the National Party to find something positive to say about New Zealand during its conference in Christchurch this weekend.
"New Zealand is a great country and there is wonderful cause for optimism about how much we can achieve. It's sad that you never hear the National Party share in that hopefulness," Jim Anderton said.
"The National Party's negativity seems to be a low self-esteem problem. They are negative not only about New Zealand, but also about themselves. Every time I pick up the paper another National MP is attacking the National Party.
"I feel sorry for them. They are so miserable. They should take a look around and see what a great country New Zealand really is.
"Most people are generally satisfied with the direction of the country. Surely that's a good thing, which politicians should welcome! Imagine telling the country it's all terrible and everything has to change, when most people think the country is generally headed in the right direction.
"Wouldn't it be nice to hear the National Party talk about the talent and creativity of New Zealanders? Couldn't they find just one little thing the government has done to speak positively about? We can only hope the National Party finds something positive to say this weekend," Jim Anderton said.
