Hodgson Loses More Ground With Farmers
Hodgson Loses More Ground With Farmers
Wednesday 16 Jul 2003 Gerry Eckhoff Press Releases -- Rural
ACT New Zealand Rural Affairs Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff said today he was not surprised that Convenor on Climate Change Pete Hodgson had withdrawn a promise of further consultation with farmers over the proposed Flatulence Tax.
"In a fit of pique, Mr Hodgson has accused the Federated Farmers Executive of spreading mis-information regarding the new tax. The reality is that the Executive has been highlighting the concerns of its members - hardly a crime," Mr Eckhoff said.
"The temperature is rising. Pressure on the Government is growing daily and, as a result, has adopted a siege mentality over this issue. Following yesterday's performance, when Rural Affairs Minister Jim Sutton lost all credibility with farmers, Mr Hodgson has followed suit with his ill-considered letter to Federated Farmers.
"This Labour Government is only too happy to consult Maori over foreshore and seabed claims, but shows callous indifference towards farmers who contribute to an industry that produces 17 percent of New Zealand's GDP, and 67 percent of its total exports" Mr Eckhoff said.
