Children's Commissioner must have independence

Children's Commissioner must have independence

National Party Social Services spokeswoman Katherine Rich says it's critical the new Children's Commissioner remain independent from her political masters.

"Cindy Kiro has enormous boots to fill, Roger McClay has done an excellent job in often difficult situations.

"He hasn't been afraid to speak for those who can't speak for themselves even when his opinions aren't widely accepted, or liked, by the Government.

"Expectations are doubly high given that it was recently reported that Shannon Pakura and Celia Lashlie, two high profile New Zealanders with a proven track record in child advocacy, didn't even get an interview for the job.

"The National Party hopes Cindy Kiro will maintain the tradition of independence and won't shy away from offering criticism when it's due.

"The National Party is now challenging Cindy Kiro to look at and listen to the views of the traditional Kiwi family - their success is the key to New Zealand's future," Mrs Rich says.
