It's About Time, Labour
It's About Time, Labour
Monday 25 Aug 2003 Dr Muriel Newman Press Releases -- Other
ACT New Zealand Housing Spokesman Dr Muriel Newman today welcomed Labour's plan to enable the address of former tenants who are beneficiaries to be accessed by officers of the court for the purpose of serving tenancy tribunal court orders for the recovery of debts, but demanded to know why it has taken Labour so long to see sense.
"ACT has long campaigned on this issue, encouraging property owners and landlords throughout the country to use the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill, presently before Parliament, as a vehicle to express their concerns to Parliamentarians.
"Further, last year I launched a petition to Parliament - supported by hundreds of people - on this very issue. It is currently being considered by the Social Services Select Committee, and has helped to force the Government to take action.
"While it is pleasing to see that the Government has finally decided to fix this problem, it is a shame that it has taken so long - needing so much pressure from so many people - before Labour could finally see sense," Dr Newman said.
