Greens support MPs declaring interests
The Green Party will be supporting the Members of Parliament (Pecuniary Interests) Bill, which was introduced into Parliament today.
"This bill is long overdue," said Green Co-leader, Rod Donald. "Backbench MPs should be making public any possible conflicts of interest in the same way that ministers are required to."
"I hope the transparency and accountability required in this bill will lead to improving public confidence in the honesty of MPs.
"I am pleased that a number of our suggestions, including the declaration of any interest in a trust or other organisation that receives government funding, have been incorporated in the bill.
"We intend to propose an amendment to achieve a consistent threshold level for shareholdings, gifts and debts."
