Greens praise Air NZ decision
The Green Party has congratulated the Commerce Commission on its decision not to approve the Air New Zealand-Qantas alliance.
"This was one deal we can afford to do without," Green Co-leader Rod Donald said today. "Air New Zealand is a national asset and a national treasure and this deal would have allowed Qantas to plunder our national carrier's hard-won gains.
"Air New Zealand is much more than just an airline, it is a crucial strategic asset and an internationally recognised symbol of our national identity. A strong, locally owned airline is important to the future of both trade and tourism in New Zealand.
"And it makes money: a $220 million profit last year and a forecast for at least that much this year. In comparison, Qantas has this year posted its first-ever six-month loss. So, who needs who?"
