National calls for independent inquiry on McIntosh
The National Party wants a full and independent investigation into the Corrections Department's failure to supervise convicted paedophile Lloyd Alexander McIntosh.
"An internal report from the Department is not good enough. New Zealanders are not going to tolerate another snow job by this government agency," says National Police spokesman, Tony Ryall.
"I am extremely angry that the Department's Acting General Manager is reported as saying an internal report will not be made public.
"They won't get away with a cover-up.
"The people of Palmerston North were assured that Police and Corrections would monitor McIntosh to the maximum extent they were able.
"I warned the Government in June that this man would be the next Barry Ryder, a dangerous paedophile who also reoffended while under the supervision of a government agency. The Minister promised action but hasn't delivered.
"National wants Minister Swain to call for an independent report today. He should show some steel instead of hiding behind a bureaucrats skirt. There must be more to this than the privacy argument reported in the media
"Where are all the do-gooders who said leave this man alone? What do they say now?" asked Mr Ryall.
