NZ First Would Support Foreshore Move
New Zealand First would support any fresh moves by Labour to ensure that the Crown had legal title to the foreshore and seabed. Rt Hon Winston Peters today welcomed reports that the Government was reviewing its position on the issue.
He said that if Labour found itself without the numbers to vest ownership of the foreshore and the seabed in the Crown on behalf of all New Zealanders, New Zealand First would provide 13 votes.
“We would however, also seek assurances that Crown legal title would eventually be extended to other parts of the environment where ownership could be disputed. “We are referring to minerals, flora and fauna, forests, landscapes and whatever natural resources are accepted as being the common treasures of all of us.”
Mr Peters said that traditional rights of use would still be protected but they would not be inappropriately equated with any property title.
“The present mess and false expectations that are
worrying people throughout the country are the result of
years of Treaty madness created equally by Labour and
National. “We can stop it now, and we have the numbers to
help,” said Mr Peters.
